Proven Racehorses
Bonnie Joan - broodmare
Although we didn’t race her, we knew from an early age that Father Dan held this daughter of Somebeachsomewhere in extremely high regard. She duly went on to prove Dan right with 10 wins and 11 placings from 28 starts and over $200k prizemoney. Sent to Cran Dalgety to race as an early juvenile, Bonnie Joan developed some minor leg problems and had to be put aside until a 3YO. A stocky girl with a high cruising speed she was most effective when out in front and doing her thing with Dexter Dunn in the bike. This was best displayed in the Southland Oaks Final on 30 April 2015 in a 1:57:0 mile-rate over 2700m.
Her toughness was best displayed in winning the Group 2 NZ Mares Championship at Addington Raceway on 2 February 2018 in a 1:55:2 mile rate over the 1980m journey.
Kilowatt Kid - 10YG,
Another one we didn’t race. However, this American Ideal gelding began his career as a 3YO in style with a first-up win at Winton HRC on 28 September 2017. Developed and trained by Alister Black, until being exported in 2020 to race for the Greg and Skye Bond stable in Western Australia. He compiled a tidy record of 9 wins and 11 placings from 40 starts for prizemoney of over NZ$100k. Winning between the distances of 2200m and 2700m.
The Kid has subsequently taken a 1:51.0 career best winning mile rate in the USA where he is trained by Rob Harmon. The now 10YG has 16 wins and 19 placings from 73 USA starts, to date. Career earnings NZD$ 350k.
Twice placed at a Group 3 level. Most notably the Invercargill Gold Cup. His best NZ performance was arguably a strong stayer’s run, from the rear of the field to finish a close third in a 1:55:6 mile-rate over 2400m at Wyndham HRC. You can watch it here.
Break Dance - broodmare
An Art Major mare with a withering sprint, Break Dance could also follow speed and stay, having won up to 2700m. After a promising start as a 3YF at Reefton Trotting Club on 8 March 2015, when going from last to first in the space of 200m down the back straight, (you can watch it here), a minor bone-chip stalled her career. It wasn’t until her 5YO season, under the careful guidance of Amber Hoffman, that we saw the absolute best of her, culminating in a barnstorming finish to take out the Southern Belle Mares Speed Series Final on 9 April 2017 at Winton HRC in a 1:53:3 mile-rate. It’s a real beauty – she’s #10 starting from the second line.
Sand Wave - 5YH
Retired injured in 2024, with 10 wins and 10 placings from 29 starts. Career earnings of $176k. Under the stewardship of Nathan Williamson, his standout performance, was a third placing in the 2022 NZ Derby behind Akuta and Republican Party. You can watch the replay here. Also the winner of two group/listed races in 2022 - the Southern Supremacy Final and Garrard Sires Stakes Magnifique.
Sand Wave is a rare gem being from the last crop of Somebeachsomewhere, the winner of 20 from 21 starts and the world's equal fastest 3YO in 1.46.4. Gone before his time having sired only 483 horses in NZ with a “winners to starters” ratio of 89%. Sand Wave is a full brother to Bonnie Joan.
WavetheBill - 6YG
A Net Ten EOM gelding who possesses high speed and ran a sub 1:56:0 mile-rate at his first race day start behind Krug and company in a heat of the NZ Sires Stakes. Under the stewardship of Derek Balle, he subsequently qualified for the 2020 NZ Sires Stakes Final at Addington Raceway. After a short stint with Simon Adlam, WTB rediscovered consistency with 2 wins and 8 placings from 27 starts.
Sold to stable clients of KerryAnn Morris, Lucky Lodge, NSW in October 2022 and since taken a 1:51:1 winning mile rate. Recording 10 wins from 37 starts in his Australian career, to date.
The Next Crop
WavebyDesign - 4YM
By Art Major, sire of the fastest pacer ever bred in the Southern hemisphere, Field Marshall (1.46.9). One of the greatest sires in the world today, who continually sires high class fillies and colts.
A full sister to Break Dance, she has shown similar traits during her 3 preparations, to date, under the stewardship of Simon Adlam in Mid Canterbury.
WavebyDesign has made three raceday appearances to date without much success. Now spelling with a view to returning from the Summer grass track racing.
Miki Wave - 2YF
Although slipping to Betting Line in 2021, Wave Runner successfully delivered her second Always B Miki foal on 30 Oct 2022. As with all her foals, this filly has been raised under the expert eye of Brent and Sheree McIntyre at Macca Lodge, Southland – the birthplace of some of NZ’s finest racing stock. You can check out where it all begins here. https://maccalodge.com/.
Now under going her first preparation with Simon Adlam in Mid Canterbury.
3YF, Mikra Wave - 3YF
By the world’s fastest horse in a 1.46.0 mile-rate as a 5YO – Always B Miki, who has also made a very encouraging start to his NZ breeding career, leaving 40 winners to date. Standouts being - Franco Indie, I’llavabubbles, and You’re So Fine.
Mikra Wave has a bit of size about her. Two preparations to date, under the stewardship of Simon Adlam in Mid Canterbury. Recorded her first win and unlucky 4th from her two raceday appearances, thusfar. Back in training for a crack at the Spring racing in 2024.
Second Wave - broodmare
Bred to Sir Lincoln, which provides a 7/8th same cross as Somebeachsomewhere. We never saw the best of her on the race track due to health issues.
Second Wave delivered a colt to Fear the Dragon on Xmas Eve 2022 and is now in foal to Captain Midnight.
