Sand Wave is number 3 in New Zealand

Addington Raceway - 4 Dec 2022

Sand Wave (aka the Southern Tsunami aka the People’s Champion) did us proud by running third in the New Zealand Derby - NZ’s most prestigous race for 3YO boys. While no match for the winner, Akuta, he showed tremendous ticker to race three-wide in the open over the final 900m and finish a very game third placing.

Sand Wave’s run was so good he even got a positive mention by industry expert, Greg O’Connor, in the latest episode of the Box Seat.

Big ups to trainer Nathan Williamson for managing to turn around the horse’s general health after an unexpected subpar performance ten days prior. A mix of too much Canterbury dust in the system and low blood sugar levels seem too have been the cause. Congratulations to the winning connections who were also in fine form on the day. Check out this post race snippet to hear from the Nude at 10 boys.

Look out for Sand Wave next at the Group One $100k Invercargill Gold Cup on 17 December. He starts off the front line over 3200m on his home track and gets a head start over the open class horses. Longer term his 2023 year may well involve a shot at New Zealand’s richest race, $1m The Grins at Cambridge Raceway on 14 April, followed by the NZ Trotting Cup on the second Tuesday in November.
