Sand Wave secures 3YO Supremacy

A clever tactical drive by trainer Nathan Williamson ensured the warm favourite and top qualifier won this year’s edition of the Group 2 Alabar Southern Supremacy Final for 3YC&G at Ascot Park, Invercargill on 30 April 2022.

It may only have been a five horse field, but Nathan did not take any chances. He was quickly off the trail after 400m and dictated proceedings thereafter over the 2700m mobile. Sand Wave cruised to the line in 3.20.4 with a smart closing 800m of 55:6 and 1.5 lengths to spare over With a Bang and Mossdale Ben. You can watch the race here.

In recording the 7th win of his 13 start career, Sand Wave has now firmly established himself within the ranks of the country’s top 3YO’s. From a family perspective, he is second behind his full-sister Bonnie Joan (10 wins, $201k earnings and 1.52.8 mile rate).

Sand Wave’s win completed a family double in Southland’s premier 3YO events, albeit 5 years apart, with Bonnie Joan taking out the 2017 Southland Oaks Final. Watch the replay here if you have time.
